Rookie Does Art!

Oh happy new year, by the way.

If you’ve made resolutions, all the best keeping them! Thankfully I’m off the bandwagon of new year resolution makers, like I’ve been for a long while now. Not because I think they’re a bad thing—it’s nice to make good plans for yourself. I just find it adds a ton of pressure to my life when I look at those lofty goals I set for myself, and consider all I have to do to make it happen. In the end I fold, frustrated, and wait for December 31st to make new resolutions. So I’d rather just take the days as each one comes, making tiny contributions and tiny plans. Seems a lot more practical to me than the entire ‘New year, new me’ biz.

So I drew something. Yaay. First, because I had the privilege/ misfortune of showing an enemy of mine an old drawing I did, and he’s been bugging me ever since to draw again. But the bigger reason is, I came across this quote that scared the everything out of me:

“I have offended God and mankind because my work didn’t reach the quality it should have.” – Leonardo da Vinci.

*insert wide-eyed emoji*

It bewildered me to the bone! I mean, we know da Vinci. He’s the crazy one that drew the Mona Lisa, considered the greatest painting ever. Ever. In our minds he’s one of the biggest things that happened to art. And he says his work didn’t reach the quality it should have. And because of that he says he has offended God and mankind.

Eish.

In other words, my rookie art, because I don’t share it, don’t practice it, don’t consider it anything worth…considering, has offended God, mankind, the Milky Way Galaxy, Asgard, Lucy, the Trojan Horse, the random girl Captain America saved in The Avengers, Abramovic, and a partridge in a pear tree.

So I decided, after much deliberation (approximately 2.07896 seconds long), that I’d start again.

And I picked Janelle Monae to be my…guinea pig. No, really, I picked her because I like weird. She’s weird. How many girls can rock a pompadour and masculine clothing like she does? And she’s pretty. And talented.

Plenty laziness set in when I reached here. And frustration.

Progress. I had to stop and go and buy pie for my mother. And walk saa.

After a lot of patience (surprisingly), and laziness, and coffee (with plenty milk and small sugar—or maybe it was small milk and plenty sugar), I completed this in the wee hours of 31st December.

You may judge. I like. It’s not as good as it could’ve been, but I’m kind of glad, because I started practicing again, and while I’m not where I want to be yet, I’m not where I used to be. And I can’t light my lamp and hide it under a bowl (Matthew 5:15), so if God’s given me the ability to hold a pencil and scratch paper meaningfully with it, I’ve got to show it.

Yaay. I sounded so wise over there.

Maybe I’ll draw again. In about a year. Hopefully less. J

To Move or not to Move

That is the question. I’m not sure when this blog became a quarterly. Because how am I only updating this for the first time in over three months? Sorry that I’m asking you. I had to ask someone. Photo Credit: Kaboompics, Pexels. Now that we’ve gotten the apology of my inconsistency out of the way (🙈), let’s celebrate!  I’m 24! Woohoo! In the voice of Liesl from The Sound of Music, ‘I am twenty-four going on twenty-five!’ Yes, I’ve been twenty-four for a few years now, but let us concentrate on important things.  In slightly less incredible news, I set a goal to read 25 books this year. Thus far, I’ve read 24. It’s not because I’m disciplined, or that I’ve got so much time on my hands. It’s just proof of how much traffic I have to sit through to and from work. People have got to learn to stop buying cars and just…walk! The air would be so much cleaner.  As is my habit, when I read a good book, I’ve got to talk about it, give the mandem something to add to their TB...

Iron's Match

They’d left the keys there to taunt her.  Naa lunged. Stupid.  Like the first thirty times, the chains on her ankles tensed, snatching her back. Pain tore across her body as she slammed into the dungeon’s icy wall. She wheezed through chattering teeth. The glowing orange manacles around her wrists continued to shrink, their sinister laugh echoing in the darkness.  She chuckled. Her tummy cramped. ‘I’ll need a long beauty rest after this.’ Wind whooshed in through the window slats, carrying sounds of distant brass harmonies and beating drums. The coronation!  Seven days. That was how long the strongest–or most stubborn–magic wielders could survive before the manacles fused with their skin, sucking all their ability. It had been six days since Jasim threw her in, clearing the final obstacle to his coronation tomorrow. Naa’s chains rattled as she scrambled to her feet. She could not hang around for another day.  If she could just reach the stupid keys! ...

What’s your Christmas like?

What does Christmas mean to you?  No doubt, everyone will have a different answer to that.  Rest period! Christmastime is like 9 o’clock for tired millennials. We will use it to sleep. Not sure how it’s been for the rest of the world, but if you live in Ghana, you’ve seen shegey. Now’s the time to put your feet up on the table and relax, unwind, undo the stress of 2024, watch cozy television and sip a beverage of choice.  Danish cookie time! There’s no rule that it’s only at Christmas we should eat those fancy cookies that come in the sewing material containers, but let’s face it, Danish cookies hit different in December. So for some, Christmas is the period for indulgence, a time to stuff yourself with baked goodies (I love cake!), test the tensile strength of your bladder by drinking just everything, and visit every party.  Family time! Some people associate Christmas with reuniting with family. Many an introvert has had to suffer through phone calls and ...
